Literature
Not all 18th Century aristocratic British Grand Tourists to Italy came back with hordes of Roman statues, Greek pots and other ancient curiosities; many came back with ‘the pox’ or ‘the clap’, impoverished by ruinous gambling debts, and burdened with unwanted children and awkward wives after careless moments. This illustrated lecture explores the seductive lure of sun, sex and forbidden pleasures and how they encouraged waywardness in unsupervised male voluptuaries from
cooler climes.
