William Yang: My Generation

Theatre

My Generation is William Yang’s story of Sydney’s artistic and queer scenes from the late 1970s through the 1980s. It is told from the point of view of someone with a glass of champagne in one hand and a camera in the other. Yang experienced the events of these times, which were sometimes wild and often indulgent. It was a time of change: the old order was challenged.

Presented in Yang’s unique performance style using spoken word, image and live music this vibrant and moving work weaves together stories about the personalities of Sydney’s artistic, bohemian and underground social scenes. It retells the glamour of Jenny Kee and Linda Jackson’s fashion events, Brett Whiteley art-world, the strengthening of the Sydney gay and lesbian community and the flowering of the Sydney Mardi Gras, and the theatrical circle of Jim Sharman, Kate Fitzpatrick and Patrick White.

My Generation is presented as part of Performance Space's You Are Here season. The You Are Here performance program is made up of four works by queer artists exploring how we locate ourselves in place and time.
