The biggest and best-loved community event of the Season, Fair Day will officially launch this year’s Mardi Gras and promises a fun, relaxed day out for all the family, even the pets!

Up to 70,000 routinely turn out to sit on the grass, browse the stalls, gorge themselves on the plethora of delicacies available at the stalls, have a few drinks, but most of all to catch up with old friends – and make some new ones.

A showcase of entertainment will be the centrepiece of Fair Day, including performances from Mardi Gras Festival highlights, international DJs and bands, and the return of the AXN Search for a Cover Model competition on the ANZ Main Stage.

Held once again in Camperdown’s Victoria Park, Mardi Gras Fair Day will also feature a revamp of the campest dog show around and a new garden area planted with DJs.

Fair Day now includes the official launch of the Mardi Gras season with Lord Mayor of the City of Sydney, Clover Moore MP, doing the honours at 12pm on the ANZ Stage.

This will be followed by an hour long Festival showcase including performances by the wickedly talented drag kings from A Night of Kings; part-parody, part-tribute female trio the Margaritas as well as excerpts from many Festival shows including Glace Chase’s Last Night’s Beauty, Dean Arcuri’s To Sir With Glove, UK duo Frisky and Mannish, and Off-Broadway musical Thrill Me, based on the chilling true story of the ‘perfect crime’ killers, Leopold and Loeb.

The much loved Doggywood dog show will get a revamp this year by being moved into the heart of the park. No longer banished to a distant corner, the canine competition – including fantastic games like the obstacle course and owner-mutt look-a-like – will now be even easier to visit throughout the day.

New for 2010 the Gaydar Lounge Garden is a new relaxed space to chill out away from the hustle of the rest of Fair Day. It’s the ideal spot to have a drink and kick back to the sounds of the garden’s own dedicated DJs.

On the ANZ Stage Fair Day goers can listen to a great range of established and emerging talent including international must see performances from German funk outfit Lucasonic and one of only two Sydney shows by Ivri Lider – one of Israel’s biggest selling music artists and an out gay man to boot.

Meanwhile, everything everyone loves about Fair Day will still be there – the Dykes on Bikes, the Bear Tree, sporting antics with Team Sydney, masses of stalls to browse and delectable foods to try.

All kinds of community groups use Fair Day as their chance to recruit, provide information, share resources and give things away. You certainly won’t leave empty-handed! You might well come away with a new hobby, a cause you want to commit to or at the very least a fridge magnet!

Victoria Park is just a 10 minute walk from Central or Newtown stations.

Please note: no BYO alcohol is allowed at this event.
