Dance parties
Appearances by massive international stars George Michael, Kelly Rowland, Amanda Lepore and Adam Lambert were the ‘icing on the cake’ at this year’s Sydney Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras Party, joining major international DJs such as David Guetta and Carl Cox and an audience of over 12,000 partygoers.
The Party, which took place on 6th/7th March at the Playbill Venues and Entertainment Quarter in Sydney, was punctuated by five big shows, kicking off at midnight with a major drag show set to Shirley Bassey’s Let’s Get This Party Started.
At 1am the audience in the Royal Hall of Industries was treated to the appearance of one of the world’s great singing talents, George Michael, in a one-off private show for Mardi Gras. George performed Outside and was joined by a drag king and some very hot muscled male dancers. He had an amazing time and toured all the venues after his 1am performance and mixed with guests.
At 3am Kelly Rowland performed When Love Takes Over, her appearance coinciding with the beginning of a set by French superstar DJ David Guetta who is also the producer of the track. The show was styled as an ode to gay and lesbian marriage. The venue was decked out like a cathedral with backup dancers dressed as brides and grooms and preachers with Kelly looking amazing as a sexy gospel singer on centre stage.
At 5am a mummified body was placed in the middle of the RHI stage. Gradually the bandages were removed to unveil the stunning and voluptuous Amanda Lepore, resplendent in one of her trademark minimalist costumes. Ms Lepore performed to a mash-up that included her own hits Champagne and My Hair Looks Fierce in arguably the most colourful show of the night, with dancers in bright green cut-out costumes, a massive inflatable muscle man and a massive dress enveloping Amanda and covering the stage.
To close the party at 8am Adam Lambert, decked out in codpiece, wearing skin tight codpiece, leather harness black pants and jewel-studded jacket, performed his hit For Your Entertainment in a high energy performance supported by a group of glam rock drag queens.
These major shows were the headline-grabbing moments in a Party that spanned four venues with a line-up that included major international and local DJ names such as David Guetta, Carl Cox, Bimbo Jones, Dusty Kid and Leomeo, as well as live acts such as Chaingang and The Swiss.
