Do you remember your first Mardi Gras experience?
“There’s one that stands out in my memory, and I think I was maybe 17 or 18. Growing up in WesternSydney, queerness felt like a distant concept. When we thought about Mardi Gras, we just thought how fun it would be. I remember watching the Parade and being in awe of the celebration and happiness surrounding queerness. I had never known that to be possible.”
What is your favourite Mardi Gras memory?
“I remember one Mardi Gras that was my favourite and least favourite at the same time. I had multiple gigs booked that day, which was great and I’m very grateful for, but it was exhausting! It was beautiful to see the different ways people celebrated. After my gigs, I went to two house parties with my friends. That experience opened my eyes to Mardi Gras and how there are so many ways to celebrate. I’ve seen myself and others put pressure on ourselves to have the best Mardi Gras, but there’s no one right way to do it.”
What event are you looking forward to in 2025?
“Do you know what? I’m a bit embarrassed to admit this, but I’ve never been to the Sissy Ball because I’ve always had something on, and I really, really want to go!”
What does Free to be mean to you?
“I feel like we have to be grateful for how far we’ve come. Just look at how free we are to celebrate now compared to the first Mardi Gras! But we still have so far to go in making our community inclusive and celebratory for everybody. As far as we’ve come, we’re not at the end, and there won’t be an end. We want everyone to feel welcome, and I don’t think we’re quite there yet. It’s about acknowledging how far we’ve come and looking at how we need to move forward.”
