Deaf Drag Divas
Deaf Drag Divas: Reclaiming Our Spotlight” is a groundbreaking event that aims to revitalize the deaf drag scene and create an authentically inclusive queer space. Historical photos from the Deaf queer community show Deaf drag queens in private backyards in the 1950s and official records show that Australia previously had Miss Deaf Drag Australia competitions. Drag, as a radical act of self-expression, is no different for Deaf LGBTQIA+ individuals, whose language embodies visual expression. However, in the last two decades, the flame has dimmed and the rich history, experiences and knowledge have not been carried on. We want to relight the flame, reuniting our community together through our event.
While many queer venues offer interpreted access, our community-led initiative goes beyond mere accommodation. We’re rekindling the spirit of the legendary deaf drag competitions that were once pivotal in our community’s cultural landscape.
This event isn’t just about entertainment; it’s about empowerment, representation, and celebrating our unique intersection of deaf and queer identities. By providing a platform for deaf drag performers, we’re not only showcasing incredible talent but also fostering a sense of belonging and pride. Join us for a night of dazzling performances, vibrant energy, and a powerful statement of visibility. “Deaf Drag Divas” isn’t just an event; it’s a movement towards a more inclusive and diverse queer culture.
